Nagpur: The ‘heart of India’ witnessing a manifold change under the Smart City Mission

Nagpur is a smart city that was chosen in round 2 of the Smart cities mission by the Ministry of Housing Urban affairs. India’s smart city proposal(SCP) aims to transform the heart of India into-liveable,  eco-friendly, edu-city and an inclusive city for people to connect better with their government.As part of SCP, Nagpur aims to develop a truly inclusive city by removing the dichotomous growth and also enhance the city’s profile by improving the quality of life in vulnerable areas. It seeks to bring them at par with the rest of the city, through the implementation of Town Planning Schemes by using retrofitting model in 1730 acres of Pardi-Bharatwada-Bhandewadi and Punapur (PBBP) areas. This unique intervention will positively influence the quality of life of the projected population of 3.23 Lakhs.

 

The Area-based component of the smart city proposal includes 20 projects with an estimated cost of Rs 2802.10 crore and pan-city initiative with a project of an estimated cost of Rs 520 crore. The area-based development includes ongoing projects of  Design and construction of Roads, Bridges, Culverts, Sidewalks, MEP works on TenderSURE.The concept for a Smart CT will be made through retrofitting, re-development and green field. Under Smart transport infrastructure, smart elements have been installed 77 bus stops out of 355 bus shelter. Under project green convergence 1,36,000 LED lights are to be installed in 10 zones of NMC area. So far, 1,34,912 LED lights have been installed. One of the impactful projects under ABD is the TenderSURE project. The project includes road-non motorised Transport,24*7 water supply for ABD area, integrated wastewater management and stormwater Drainage project, utility ducting, piped gas network, smart electricity grid and bicycle track.

 

The pan-city component of Nagpur smart city is being implemented by MahaIT corporation under convergence. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 520 crores (including operation and maintenance (O&M) cost for five years). Larsen and Toubro (L&T) have been appointed as Master System Integrator (MSI). They have laid down 1015 km of Optical fibre network.3867 CCTV Surveillance cameras were installed.136 hotspots established and it installed 1360 Wi-Fi access point for free internet to citizens.5.8 km road to be developed as a Smart Road with Smart Bus stops, Smart Environment, Smart Parking, Smart Lights and ICT based Solid Waste Management solutions. The setting up of command control centres in NMC administrative building has helped in solving more than 1100 crimes with the help of cctv camera.
