In the past months, several steps have been taken by the Railway Ministry to improve and maintain the infrastructure of Railways, one of them being the cleanliness and sanitation concerned with the railway stations.

To track the development done after launching of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2016, the Railway Ministry conducted the survey ‘Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat’ to check the development for the same.

The Indian Railways Survey ranked railway stations and zones on several parameters such as solid and liquid waste management, energy management, cleaning activities, etc. The 2019 survey on cleanliness has proved to be beneficial as it takes into consideration the significant improvement in the scores and rankings of all Indian Railways Stations. It identifies the stations that have shown development in cleanliness and hygiene from the previous year. The  Indian Railways survey conducts the ranking of the railway stations and zones on the parameters of solid and liquid waste management, energy management, cleaning activities, etc. 

According to the survey, the top 10 cleanest Indian Railways Stations of India are Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jammu Tawi, Durgapura, Gandhinagar-Jp, Suratgarh, Ajmer, Udaipur City, Haridwar and Vijayawada stations respectively. The top 10 cleanest sub-urban stations included are Andheri, Santragachi, Naigaon, Virar, Kandivli, Dombivli, King’s Circle, Borivali, Currey Road and Santacruz stations.

Considering the railway station that have shown improvement, Faizabad Railway Station under the Northern Railway Zone of India is top on the list by scoring  883.14 out of 1000 in 2019 as against 522.99 in 2018. The Faizabad station under Northern railway zone has topped the list of most improved stations by scoring 883.14 out of 1000 in 2019 as against 522.99 in 2018, thereby registering an improvement score of 360.14.
