The city of Lakes is on the way to gain a new name as India’s most True Smart City under the works undertaken as part of Bhopal Smart City  Project. Tarun Pithode, Bhopal’s district Collector and Smart city Chairman said that by the end of the year, around 400 smart poles will be installed to provide seamless internet access via Wi-fi hotspots. Out of the 400 smart poles, 150 have already been installed and while the other 250 are to be completed by the year-end. The poles are not ordinary poles, they will have several charging stations for electric vehicles and weather sensors are being set up there. In order to promote the use of EV’s, the one-time rate of electric vehicles set up has been brought down to Rs. 50 to Rs. 500 fro senior citizens, women and children.

Hi-Tech Surveillance System

The surveillance system of the city would also undergo a reform, the city will get a 200 km long optic fibre with 240 smart cameras installed in 22 squares. The cameras are smart as they will not only contribute to the safe city initiative but also help the local police in setting up an integrated traffic management system, which would enable the authorities to manage traffic efficiently. Also, Bhopal Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) will see the installation of cameras to keep an eye on people violating traffic norms. Pithode also said that the incubation centre in the smart city office premise has led to 10 startups being initiated creating a buzz in the city and the nation. The money for the smart city initiatives required funding for further operations, thus the Expression of Interest (EOI) was floated which received interest from five financial institutions namely –  Axis Bank, Punjab National Bank, Power Finance Corporation and the Housing and Urban Develop Corporation (HUDCO) to lend Rs. 1000 Crore. The city would also get a common utility duct which will be created for cable telephone, television and other networks, for which a common trench would be dug up.

Smart Waste Management

The local municipality is also taking up measures to tackle garbage whereby, they are carrying out cleaning and segregation in several garbage transfer stations. The next part of the process involves the waste to be compressed and transferred to a dumping location, this waste would then be used to generate electricity and to make manure.

Smart Class in Schools

Apart from commercial activities in various schools and gardens, Bhopal is also coming up with ‘smart class’ program which would be first introduced in 10 schools of the city. For this, Extramarks, a Noida based leading education technology company will provide curriculum content and training material for teachers. The city authority and the Extramarks are together running a proof of concept (PoC).

Area Based Development initiative

The district administration plans to build 5000 residential flats under the area based development (ADB), a part of the Smart City Program. According to an ET report of 2019, as a part of this scheme, 2000 housing flats have already been completed. “Dedicated tracks for bicycle users is also being developed further, and apart from it, a smart city relies on multi-level smart parking which we have already done at three locations and has also approved it at two different sites,” the top official added.
