XII Metropolis World Congress unites decision-makers



Under the theme Global Challenges: Major Cities in Action, the XII Metropolis World Congress united, decision-makers from major cities around the world as well as public, institutional, academic, private and community stakeholders in MontrA?al, Canada in order to Showcase and acknowledge good urban practices from across the globe.

Mayors from around the world had arrived in Montreal for the Metropolis World Congress. It was the 12th edition of the conference that focused on how cities are tackling global issues such as climate change. The event included 140 mayors and around 1,000 delegates.

Ratna Omidvar, Senator and Executive Director and Founder of the Global Diversity Exchange, had stated City leaders have a key role to play in the integration and inclusion of newcomers. While diversity is a fact in a growing number of cities around the world, inclusion is a choice.

The conference, A?which took from June 19 to 22, 2017, saw four days of enriching discussions and exciting conferences and activities.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke as part of a panel discussion that included Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo which focused heavily on climate change, the integration of new immigrants and terrorist attacks.

President of the Congress Board of Directors, Monique F. Leroux, said, The openness, responsiveness and cooperative spirit of all the participants gathered together in MontrA?al were the perfect environment for fruitful exchanges and reflections. The contribution of diverse participants, notably from the business sector and members of the civil society, is crucial to identifying solutions to address the challenges we face locally and internationally. I am proud of the MontrA?al Declaration and of the leadership shown by the cities and organisations that made it possible.

The closing ceremony provided the chief delegates with the opportunity to join the voice of member cities of the AIMF to proclaim the MontrA?al Declaration, which set out the commitment of cities to come together in taking on local and global challenges, particularly in implementing the Paris Climate Agreement.
