The state government of West Bengal is planning to develop Santiniketan as a Gitabitan theme township, which would reflect the culture of Bengal and the ethos of Rabindranath Tagores vision.

The project would be implemented by the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) in collaboration with Sriniketan Shantiniketan Development Authority (SSDA). The state urban development department has issued an order on the issue.

Government officials stated that the plan was to develop Santiniketan as a centre of tourist attraction imbibing Tagores spirit, philosophy and ideals.

We have already started working on the design drawing. The entire concept will be drawn keeping in mind that nationally and internationally acclaimed personalities visit Santiniketan and they would get a taste of Santiniketan and that of rural Bengal and culture, said state urban development department additional chief secretary Debashis Sen.

The theme project would be developed on 122-acre area. Once the design drawing is complete, the authorities would start implanting the plan.
