New town

To keep up with the speed of rapid urbanisation and fulfil the escalating demand for housing and commercial spaces, New Town was created in the eastern outskirts of Kolkata. It serves the dual purpose of an additional business centre to reduce the growing pressure on the existing central business hubs in Kolkata and Salt Lake and a place for establishing new residential units for the huge urban middle class population. In order to render the various civic services and amenities within New Town the New Town Kolkata Development Authority has been constituted under the New Town Kolkata Development Authority Act, 2007.

New Town was formerly known as Rajarhat. The process of developing the residential and industrial facilities and creating basic civic infrastructure in this area was initiated by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharya in the late 1990s. The master plan envisages a township which is at least three times bigger than its neighbouring planned Salt Lake City. The entire area is still under the process of development.A? Recently in a highest ever land selling bid in the New Town area so far, a 2.5-acre plot in the emerging township has fetched the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) of West Bengal an enormous 57.33 crore.A? It amounts to 23 crore per acre or 38 lakh per cottah.

Being a planned township, New Town, has been divided into three key areasAction Area I which mainly consists of malls, a sub Central Business District (CBD), and planned residential and commercial plots; Action Area II is to have a planned main CBD, institutional plots, IT Business Parks like DLF and Unitech, and plots for large apartment complexes, it will also house the Kolkata Museum of Modern Art; Action Area – III mainly consists of high rise residential complexes and mini sub-townships like Uniworld City and Sukhobristi.

The predominant mode of transportation that connects New Town with other parts of Kolkata includes air conditioned / non-AC government and private buses, taxi, and other popular India transports like auto rickshaws. The New Garia – Airport line of the Kolkata Metro is supposed to pass through New Town by 2014. The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is very near to the township, facilitating air connectivity to the rest of the world.

The area has one of the best entertainment facilities in the state of West Bengal. Various world-class shopping malls are being constructed in the area, a few of them is already completed. Prominent malls are Axis Mall and City Centre.
