Bidhannagar, or Salt Lake City as it is widely known, is the most important planned satellite township of the city of Kolkata. Developed between 1958 and 1965, the suburb aimed to lessen the mounting population pressure on Kolkata and satiate the demand for a new economic hub in the state along with the capital Kolkata. Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then chief minister of West Bengal, was the key person behind formulating the plan to build this new modern township, which was named Bidhannagar in his honour. Before the development of this township, the area was a conglomerate of several salt lakes. It was then filled with the dredged silt from the bottom of Hooghly River via a number of pumping stations through large pipes. It took nearly seven years to fill up the 12.35 kmA? of area with dredged silt.

The development of the area was predominantly done in sectors. By the end of 1965, Sector I was fully developed and ready for use. Sector II and Sector III were complete by 1969. Later Sector IV and V were developed as a location for IT industries. Nicco Park, the first amusement park of eastern India with 40 acres of land and the Nalban Boating Complex, are located at Sector IV. Recently, the land area of this township has almost doubled to 33.5 kmA? due to the incorporation of Duttabad, Sukantanagar, Nayapatti, Dhapa-Manpur and Mahishbathan areas.

As a planned city, Bidhannagar offers all the modern urban facilities.A? It has a clean, unspoilt environment, abundant greenery, a large number of schools and educational institutions, the biggest sports stadium in India – the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, a five-star hotel (Hyatt Regency) and a wide range of government offices that cater to the entire city of Kolkata and even West Bengal.

Three police stations are responsible for maintaining law and order in the area and another police station is likely to come up for policing of Sector V the Information Technology hub.

Adequate electricity infrastructure, water supply tanks, solid waste management and well-equipped sewerage systems provide civic infrastructure. The Information Technology hub predominantly located in Sector V is home to some of the top IT/ITES companies both Indian and multinational. According to the latest official estimate, around 1.2 lakh people are employed in these offices. The Sector V area is administered by Naba Diganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA).
