Guwahati gets Finnish technology to tackle urban floods

TheA?Guwahati Metropolitan Development AuthorityA?(GMDA) has procured a Rs 6 crore worth amphibian dredger from Finland to help reduce urban flooding in the city during monsoons. TheA?GMDAA?has already started its cleaning drive with the dredger to clear water bodies and channels in the city so that the city is not inundated after excessive downpour.
The amphibian dredger has been supplied with a multi-pontoon system. All the dredger equipment, machineries are mounted on the central pontoons whereas the side pontoons will provide additional buoyancy for smooth and stable dredging at deeper depth. It is also capable of cruising at four knots (around 7.4 km/hr) and is also capable of moving on land.
“Cleaning and development of waterbodies and channels are always a problem and cannot be done manually. This is where the dredger, with its unique multi-functional operating features, would come in handy,” said M Angamuthu, CEO of the GMDA.
