Mumbai’s west coast is due for a green change in the next six months as 12,000 coconut trees will be planted along the coast in Juhu, Versova, Aksa, Gorai, Danapani and Manori.
This mission was the brainchild of environmental activist Subhajit Mukherjee who sowed the seeds of ‘Mission Green Mumbai’ with an aim to increase the green cover specifically in the coastal area. NGO Green Yatra is also part of this mission.
Subhajit Mukherjee said that though there are many other programs which were implemented by the government and agencies, not much has benefited the coastal zone.
Subhajit is also urged everyone to adopt the saplings once they plant them, as coconut trees have a long life and take almost eight to 10 years to bear fruits so they can take the responsibility of looking after it.
Apart from the citizens, several corporate companies are also coming forward to contribute to the cause. A sapling costs between Rs. 60 to Rs. 200, which depends on its size. Apart from that, an additional Rs. 60 will be charged as transportation and labour.
