In order to bring transparency in developmental projects, Kolhapur civic body has decided to implement geo-tags.

The directions regarding geo-tagging, estimates of the projects and status of the work undertaken has been issued by the top authorities of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) to departmental heads.

The geo-tagging may also be extended to tagging trees from the city along with the properties. Civic officials claim the property assessment work was undertaken last year is using the geotagging process to locate property co-ordinates. The state government uses geotagging method for works undertaken through its flagship programme of Jal Yukt Shivar Yojana and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

A senior official of the KMC, said, “We have found duplication of works caused due to a faulty process of drafting the estimates and poor monitoring of the development works. In such process, the funds are leaked or misused and in order to avoid such discrepancies we have asked the departmental heads to geotag each and every work it proposes for approval.”

He added, “The photographs will be taken along with the co-ordinates through the geotagging process. The method will bring in transparency in allocation of funds for various development works. The records of the works undertaken will be generated easily through the database once the geo-tagging is carried out.”
