GRP initiates new distress app for rail commuters
The Government Railway Police (GRP) has developed a new technology to provide distressed rail commuters with real-time locations of the constables patrolling stations at any given time. This will enable GRP personnel to slash their emergency response time sharply from the current 20 minutes.
The new system is likely to be put in place from June when the location of all GRP personnel will be visible in real time at the GRP control room. This will enable authorities to make swift decisions about which closest patrolling constable can be despatched to aid passengers in approaching trains.
The new technology is being put in place using commercial satellites to map Mumbai’s rail network. The GRP has also roped in a firm which has developed software to provide real-time locations for patrolling staff using GPS.
Constables will have the software installed on their mobile phones, giving their precise location to the control room. The GRP has also installed GPS in its vehicles to get their exact location to reach sites of a rail roko.
GRP commissioner Niket Kaushik, said, “With this new technology we are hoping to cut down on response time and provide immediate help despite a limited number of staff.”
Once the new technology is installed, after receiving a call, the control room will send a message to the constable to attend to the passenger, along with coach details.
A senior GRP official, said, “The GRP had conducted a mock a drill in March to test the new system at Borivali station. The exact position of a constable on the platforms of Borivali station was available. It was achieved despite it being a ground-plus-one floor structure.”
